Consignment Policies

We require that all consignors completely read through these policies before bringing your items into the store to consign. We provide this comprehensive explanation so our customers can choose the best selections for their items & earnings based on their shopping habits. These selections can not be changed once your items are added to your consignment account. Although, you are always welcome to make different selections the next time you bring more items in. Too often people don’t read the policies because they don’t really care how it works initially and simply want to drop their items off which they have ready to go. We are striving to be everyone’s favorite small business and to do that we need you to partner with us by investing a few minutes here to learn what our policies are and the different options available. By leaving items with us to consign, you are acknowledging you have reviewed and understand our policies. Thank you!

  • Educational Supplies:

We accept gently used homeschool curricula & educational items for Pre- K through 12th grade, including books, manipulatives, board games, science supplies, geography aids, educational games, & other resources. Curriculum should be current or recent editions so that any required companion items are still available.

BJU & ABeka update entire editions frequently. Unfortunately, there is no need to bring in these older editions to the store as they simply do not sell. Because of this, consignors wanting to consign items by those two publishers will need to verify editions at the publishers website before bringing them in. Please note: Recent purchase does not insure that they are current. Consignors can search the subject and grade on the publishers website before bringing them in to verify their salability.

All materials should be in clean & “purchase-ready” condition. All electronics must include working batteries. All puzzles or board games need to be verified by the consignor to be complete prior to dropping them off at the store. Any item that is found to be missing parts, pieces or batteries that can not be accepted for sale, may be donated at the store’s discretion.

Typically, we price educational items at 40%-70% of current retail depending on the condition, demand, and availability. Pricing may be lower if the item is older or shows signs of wear. If consigning a particularly valuable item to you, or if you have specific requests regarding any item's pricing, please make us aware of those concerns at the time of drop off.

  • How to Consign Your Items:

We make it quick & easy! No appointments are necessary. Consignment items are accepted daily, during normal business hours. Simply bring in your consignment ready items & fill out a drop slip for each box/container.

Please limit your items per visit to 3 boxes of educational supplies. Since appointments are not required, larger amounts make it hard for staff to minimize the wait times for the other consignors also wanting to drop off and sell their items.

There are two options for all items initially dropped off: return or donate. All items regardless of this choice will expire after 12 months on the floor. This is only for when they are initially dropped off. You may choose to return to the store to pick up unsellables or to allow them to be donated.

Consignors choosing to donate any items we are unable to sell are free to drop off their items with basically no wait.

If you choose to have any later deemed unsellable items returned to you, please be prepared to wait while we quickly perform a cursory evaluation of your items. We will return any obvious unsellable items at that time. However, please note a more thorough and detailed evaluation will be done later when your items are actually added to your account. This process can take staff many hours but the good news is we never make you wait while we complete the process. Since the full evaluation, pricing, and research is done at a later time, additional items may still be returned to you once the thorough evaluation is done. If you chose to have items returned, the store will notify you by phone, voicemail or by email that you have items to be picked up. The consignor will then have (7) seven business days to return to the store to retrieve their unsellable items. Any items not picked up within that time frame will be donated. Please make sure that your email settings allow you to receive emails from The Homeschool Room.

Depending on the time of year, and the volume coming in, it can take a few days or 3- 4 weeks before items are actually added and available on your account.

  • Consigning Options:

Due to the extensive time involvement before items are ready to sell (researching editions, condition evaluation, computer entry, pricing, tagging & then shelving) there is a small listing fee charged to each consignor's account for each item entered to help contribute a small portion to the costs associated with this process. Depending on how many items are consigned, it may take staff a number of hours or a number of days getting each consignor's items available to sell. All consignors will receive their chosen percentage (50% or 40%) of each item's sale price, minus a small listing fee per item: 35¢ for each item priced <$9.99, 45¢ for each item priced <$19.99, 55¢ for each item priced <$29.99, 65¢ for each item priced <$39.99, etc. Items that require extensive cleaning, organizing, counting, or that have lots of pieces to tag may incur additional listing fees based on the time required. We try and be very selective, accepting only items we expect will successfully sell in our stores.

Flexible payment options! You may choose one of two options for your consignment earnings:

  • #1 – Store Credit:

Consignors choosing this option will receive 50% of the selling price of all items sold in the form of a store credit. This credit accrues on your account & never expires. It can be used at any time to purchase items in the store. If you are not sure that you will want to spend the store credit balance created for what you are bringing in, please select the check option instead. Accumulated store credit cannot be converted later to a check payout; however, it may be transferred/gifted to another person’s store credit account.

  • #2 – Check Pay-out:

Consignors choosing this option will receive 40% of the selling price of all items sold. Any account with a balance of $50.00 or more on the last day of each month will be paid out in full. Checks will be written on the 15th day of the following month and then automatically mailed to your home address. There is a $3.00 check fee for each check printed & mailed. Any account balance of less than $50.00 will remain on the account until the minimum check amount is reached or may be applied to in-store purchases if desired. Checks can NOT be issued for amounts less than $50.00.

Should a consignor request that we replace or reissue a lost or misplaced check, the bank requires a $35.00 stop payment fee to be paid before a new check can be reissued. Checks can not be replaced after six months from their original issue date.

  • Consignment Period:

All items have a consignment period of twelve months.

Short term weekend consignment sales can be a lot of work but unfortunately they only give your items a few hours/days to sell. If they don’t sell in that window you either give it away or lug it all back home. With us you don’t have the prep work or need to sit here with us and sell your own items. Your educational items get a whole 12 months of display time to sell!

Due to the high volume of sales/consignments we are unable to contact or notify each consignor as items sell daily. However, you are welcome to call the store and check your account balance or inventory at any time! We also always check to see if you have any funds available when you’re shopping in the store with us.

Please do not drop off any items you are not prepared to leave for the entire consignment period. Items cannot selectively be removed from inventory prematurely other than by purchase.

Consignors may opt to come to the store to locate & retrieve any unsold items during the last two weeks of their consignment period. However, it is the responsibility of the consignor to keep up with the date and return for their items if desired, before the period ends. The store cannot notify consignors of this occurrence as items expire daily. After 12 months, items will automatically become the property of The Homeschool Room if not sold or picked up by the consignor & they may be donated at the store’s discretion any time after that.

  • In Closing:

The Homeschool Room will use care in the handling of your items and do our best to protect them; however, we cannot be held responsible or liable for any loss due to fire, theft, or damage. Items left for consignment at The Homeschool Room are at the risk of the consignor.

Join over 20,000 consignors who have allowed us to sell their gently used educational items & children’s clothing. Now is a great time to get started!

When you drop off items with us and fill out the drop slip, you are acknowledging that you have reviewed and accept the consignment policies.

You made it to the end! We appreciate you taking the time to review our entire consignment process. A lot of experience and attention to detail goes into creating them. If you have any further questions or concerns please do not hesitate to ask us. We are here to help and ensure that your consignment experience with The Homeschool Room is the absolute best!
